Tips for Storing Your Nut Butter

Organic cashew and almond butterSo, you’ve just purchased your jar—or jars—of Maisie Jane’s nut butter. Great choice! Even though you’ll want to, you cannot eat it all in one sitting. So, what is the best way to store your nut butter?

1. Stir the nut butter well

You may notice oil rising to the top of your jar of nut butter. This oil separation is natural and is actually a good sign. If your nut butter doesn’t have oil separation, that generally means there are additives bonding the ingredients together. When you buy a one ingredient nut butter, such as Maisie Jane’s, there are no added emulsifiers and you know you are getting a healthier product.

You may need to give the butter a good stirring before enjoying it.  It is important to really stir the whole jar and not just the top because when the oil separates to the top, it can leave the bottom of the jar a bit dry!

2. Refrigerate after opening

Nut butter fairs best in the fridge. The healthy oils from the nuts oxidize when exposed to elements like air, light, and heat which will eventually turn the butter rancid if you don’t store it properly. Roasted nuts like those used in Maisie Jane’s nut butter have a tendency to turn rancid faster than unroasted nuts, so refrigerating will extend its life.

3. Store in the right place

If the fridge isn’t an option, store your nut butter in a dark and dry place that falls under 70 degrees. Always use a clean spoon when scooping from your nut butter to avoid any bacterial contaminations. Unrefrigerated jars may last only about 4 weeks before starting to turn. When in doubt, check the expiration date on the jar or give it a good whiff and if anything seems off toss it out.

4. Soften the nut butter when needed

Keeping your butter in the fridge does cause them to harden. However, if you need it softened to act as a spread add 1 or 2 tablespoons to a bowl and microwave for 10-15 seconds. A couple hours on the counter to soften is fine, but because there aren’t any preservatives or added ingredients in Maisie Jane’s nut butters, refrigeration is best.

Maisie Jane’s nut butters are safe, clean and natural, so you know exactly what you’re putting in your body.
