I love organic almond butter because I care about the environment and I care about my family’s health. At Maisie Jane’s we have a strong philosophy regarding sustainable agriculture. That means we farm without depleting the earth’s resources or polluting the environment. But we also deeply care about family—we’re family farmers, after all— and our local Northern California community. We wouldn’t want our family harmed by being exposed to unhealthy farming practices and we don’t want that happening to you! Here are three reasons to love going organic:
Conventional crops are often grown with synthetic or chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. It is known that the accumulated effect of pesticides and other chemicals have a wide number of health consequences. Some studies have shown that even low dose exposure to certain pesticides can increase the risk of getting leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, breast or prostate cancer. Young children and pregnant women are most at risk. At Maisie Jane’s we use natural methods to achieve our farm production goals, and our certified organic products need to adhere to stringent regulations that extend even to how they are stored and processed. That means that you can rest assured that the organic almond butter you buy is clean, safe and wholesome.
Pesticides and chemicals sprayed on plants can contaminate the soil and pollute our air. When it rains those chemicals run off and can pollute our rivers and streams. Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, and use less energy. It is also much better for nearby birds, animals, and beneficial insects like butterflies and bees. At Maisie Jane’s we try to find ways to work with Nature instead of against it. We actually have gone to the trouble to plant native bushes and plants that attract bees and leave part of the orchards’ natural grasses in place rather than chopping it down to create a safe forage area for them. That creates a healthier more balanced ecosystem on our farm and a healthier home for all the wildlife in our vicinity.
Actually, at this point in time, all almonds are GMO-free. But since we’re talking about the benefits of choosing organic, you should know that genetically engineered or modified foods with DNA altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding are not allowed to be labelled as 100% Organic. GMO crops are not necessarily bad in all cases—sometimes the technology is used to improve the nutritional quality of certain foods. But more often crops are engineered to be resistant to pesticides or to create an insecticide inside the plants. Some GMO crops are associated with higher instances of allergic responses and gastrointestinal difficulties.
At Maisie Jane’s all our organic nut butters are Non GMO Project Verified. That means that in addition to our own growing, the secondary ingredients that Maisie Jane’s buys from other growers are also GMO-free. We require documentation that meets these standards from every vendor we partner with.
Maisie Jane’s California Sunshine Products, Inc. was founded on strong beliefs and passion for offering unique, flavorful, top-quality, nut products. We strongly believe in earth-friendly practices that start on our family-owned and operated orchards. We use organic farming practices and continue in the process by using all-natural ingredients with no preservatives or GMOs. We believe in honest, friendly and helpful customer relations at all levels. We take pride in every task, every day, with every person.
