The Buzz on Bees

Posted on : January 21st, 2021

You may not know this, but almond trees only blossom in California about three weeks of the year in the month of February. Guess what? It’s almost February!

We thought we’d take a moment to share with you why this short time frame would be impossible without the help of our friends, the bees.

Among other things, California is one of the worlds biggest suppliers of almond. According to Brittany Goodrich’s article in The Conversation, California makes up about 77% of all almond production. This means it requires more than half of U.S hives, and provides revenue for about 1/3 of U.S beekeepers. To sum it up, our business needs bees just as much as they need us.

Because almond trees do not pollinate very well through wind, it is crucial for bees to help with cross pollination. Cross pollination is the transfer of pollen from one tree to another. About ONE acre of almond trees needs 2 hives of bees, and each hive houses around 20,000 bees. Half of U.S bee hives are used in California. They are brought here in semi-trucks, believe it or not, and 400-500 colonies are transferred at a time.

One of the reasons we would to shed some light on the importance of bees is because we find ourselves in a bee crisis.

If the problem persists and worsens there may not be enough bees for future pollination of almonds and ENDLESS other crops. To learn more, visit our ‘save our bees’ link on our homepage and see how we are doing our part to try to help save the bees.
