9 Label Claims You’ll Find on Nut Butter and What They Mean

Posted on : January 11th, 2017

Crunchy Almond Butter and Nutrition LabelShopping for nut butter can be stressful. You have multiple options for the same product, many with ingredients only scientists can pronounce. Each label focuses on a different benefit. Some of those benefits don’t apply to you and can leave you questioning other foods. Gluten free – what’s a gluten? Vegan – What’s a vegan? Am I a vegan? Additives – Do I not want additives? Why do some of these have 12 ingredients while others only have one? You’ve got questions, and here at Maisie Jane’s we’ve got answers.

What those label statements mean

1. Additives

Additives are added to food to make it last longer, improve or change the flavor, alter the color, emulsify the product, and several other things you may or may not deem unnecessary. There are studies showing the potential negative impacts on your health due to the consistent intake of food additives.

At Maisie Jane’s, you’ll see “No Additives” all over our site. We don’t put additives in our nut products. We want your food to be as clean and pure as possible, with no risk to your health and all the benefits you could want.

2. Gluten-Free

Gluten is a duo of proteins found in products containing wheat, barley, rye, and a few other grains. Some people have allergies or sensitivities to gluten. They suffer health consequences when they eat products containing gluten, ranging from mild discomfort to severe sickness. Some simply choose not to eat gluten as part of their diet.

It’s on the label for people who have concerns about gluten. Maisie Jane’s nut butters are all gluten-free, not only because we care about people who need gluten-free food, but because we simply don’t add all the extra stuff. It’s simply not needed.

3. Kosher Certified

Earth-Kosher
When something is kosher, consumers know that the product complies with a strict policy of kosher food laws, including cleanliness, purity and quality that originated as a set of intricate biblical laws that detail the types of food a Jewish person may eat and the ways its prepared. Maisie Jane’s nut butter is certified kosher by the Earth Kosher certification process.

4. Natural

In regards to natural products, a grower has many choices when it comes to farming the orchards:

  • Synthetic fertilizers – are composed of many chemicals.
  • Natural fertilizers – natural processes that use natural by-products, such as manure from animals.
  • Pest management – spraying pesticides versus using integrated pest management such as beneficial insects, pest traps, and close monitoring.
  • Weed management – spraying herbicides versus cutting grasses.
  • Fungus control – this can be challenging and does require the application of fungicides.

At Maisie Jane’s, we’re very conscious of our farming choices and practices for our non-organic orchards, choosing natural fertilizers, integrated pest management practices, and cutting grasses to control weeds. We look at the big picture and strive to keep the orchard in harmony so there’s minimal impact on the natural processes.

5. Non-GMO

Non GMO VerifiedGMO stands for a genetically modified organism. A GMO can be a “plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology.”

If you’re concerned about choosing non-GMO foods, Maisie Jane’s almonds are Non-GMO Project Verified and cultivated using traditional agricultural techniques grown without the use of genetic engineering or genetic manipulation.

Beyond our own growing, the secondary ingredients that Maisie Jane’s sources and buys from other growers do not contain gene-spliced bio-engineered organisms and are free of genetically modified DNA. We require documentation that meets these standards from every vendor we partner with.

6. Organic

USDA Organic SealThe USDA defines organic as follows: “Organic is a labeling term that indicates that the food or agricultural product has been produced through approved methods. These methods integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used.” Maisie Jane’s organic nut butters are the Creamy Cashew Butter, Organic Crunchy Almond Butter and Organic Smooth Almond Butter.

7. Sugar-Free

According to the FDA, “sugar-free” means less than 0.5 grams of sugar per serving on the Nutrition Facts Panel, and “contains no ingredient that is a sugar or generally understood to contain sugars.”

At Maisie Jane’s nearly all our nut butters are sugar-free because they already have a naturally sweet flavor. The only exceptions are the Chocolate Hazelnut Butter –  because, well, it’s chocolate! – and our Cashew Butter because it contains 100% dry-roasted cashews.

8. Vegan

Vegan is a type of lifestyle – and a type of diet – for people who aren’t interested in consuming animal products or animal by-products. Someone who follows this diet is known as a Vegan. Vegans don’t eat any type of animal product or product that comes from an animal. For example, no meat, no eggs, no milk, nothing made with eggs or milk, etc., is consumed by vegans.

Maisie Jane’s nut products are vegan-friendly because we don’t include animal products or by-products. We have no need to add in the extras because our nuts and nut butters are just that – nuthin’ but nuts!

9. Wheat Free

While wheat is one of the major gluten-containing grains, it’s important to remember that “wheat free” does not mean the same thing as “gluten free.” A wheat allergy generates an allergy-causing antibody to proteins found in wheat. In people with celiac disease, a protein in wheat (gluten) causes an abnormal immune system reaction.

Only 1 Ingredient

Only One IngredientOur almond and cashew nut butters have only one ingredient: nuts. That’s it. When you’re shopping and see nut butters that have several ingredients, know they are unnecessary. We use quality nuts that are naturally sweet – we don’t need to use sugar. There is a separation that occurs between the nut “meat” and the oil from the nut in the jar; it’s completely natural and only requires a quick stir to fix – we don’t need to use emulsifiers. We’d rather give you exactly what you’re looking for: nut butter. Not nut butter and sugar, or nut butter and soy lecithin, or nut butter and citric acid. Only delicious nuts.

At Maisie Jane’s, we want the least of your worries to be choosing a nut butter to suit your needs. It’s one of the many reasons why we offer nuts and nut butters using the highest quality ingredients possible with a minimalist mentality: why add more stuff to a product that’s already great? You can trust that when you eat Maisie Jane’s products, you’re eating the cleanest foods you can find in the market.
