It’s Almond Harvest Time!

It’s happy harvest season here at Maisie Jane’s orchards…and there’s a whole lot o’ shakin’ goin’ on.

Boom shakalalaka, it’s a mono boom shaker!

No, that’s not a tornado…it’s a shaker! We use two kinds: one is a mono boom shaker, which shakes one tree at a time from the front, as pictured here. The other kind is a side shaker which, you guessed it, shakes trees from the side of the vehicle.

After shaking the drupes (split almonds, ready for harvesting) off of the trees, we sweep and blow them with a sweeper machine into “wind-rows” between the rows of trees, where they will dry in the sun for 1-2 weeks before their next adventure, when we gather all of the swept-up nuts. And that’s just the beginning. We’ll be telling you more about the harvesting process as it happens.
