Fun Facts About the Pistachio

Fact #1: Pistachios are associated with happiness! The pistachio is known as the “happy nut” in China and the “smiling nut” in Iran because if you look at the nut in its shell it looks like it is smiling. The nuts are often given as a gift during the Chinese New Year because they symbolize health, happiness and good fortune. In Israel and Russia, hearing the cracking of a pistachio nut was seen as a good omen. In the Middle East it means you will have a happy relationship so couples would meet under pistachio trees and wait to see if the nuts might tell them that their relationship was going to be successful.

Fact #2: Pistachios have been here a very long time. In fact, human beings are known to have eaten them for about 9,000 years.

Fact #3: Pistachios are one of only two nuts mentioned in the Bible. Pistachios were supposedly one of the foods that Adam brought with him to Earth (Genesis 43:11) and that grew in the Garden of Eden. The other was the almond.

Fact #4: A single 1 oz serving of pistachios has as much protein as an egg. That’s about a handful or 49 nuts for 6 grams of protein.

Fact #5: Pistachios were once reserved for royalty. The Queen of Sheba loved pistachios and demanded that the entire region’s pistachio harvest be set aside for her and the royal family alone.

Fact #6: Use the “pistachio principle” to lose weight. A preliminary study found that people who eat pistachios in the shell —and leave the shells in plain sight—consume fewer nuts than those who eat them pre-shelled. And it’s a big difference! In the study they ate 41% fewer calories worth.

Fact #7: Substituting pistachios for other snack choices is good for your health. Like many other nuts, pistachios are a good source of a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that not only provide excellent nutrition for the calories, they provide many health benefits as well. Studies show they may help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar, promote healthier blood vessels and healthier gut bacteria.
