DIY Trail Mix for Back to School and Beyond!

Posted on : July 17th, 2020

I love to make my own trail mix. There’s nothing wrong with store-bought trail mix, except…there’s often just one ingredient in the mix that doesn’t agree with me or that I don’t truly love. And I know from working with kids over the years (and from being one) that they can be allergic to all sorts of things that most of us take for granted as safe to eat, or they just find them “icky.”

It’s fun to make gourmet, custom trail mix. You can include your favorite ingredients and tailor it to your own nutritional needs and seasonality. (Bonus: it actually saves money, because you’re not paying for “filler” ingredients.)

Here are some DIY Trail Mix ideas the whole family will enjoy! Make a lot and store in an airtight container, so that you’ll always have good snacking choices on hand for school lunches, hiking…and those “hangry” moments at work.

Tutti Frutti Trail Mix

Add colorful, crunchy, fruit-flavored “loop” cereal (I love the gluten-free varieties) to your favorite mix of dried fruits and nuts. Try dried strawberries or blueberries to make it extra-breakfast-y for your mornings on-the-go. Kids might even clean their rooms if you use this as an incentive.

Summer Fruit Trail Mix

For a unique snack on the go, serve up some Maisie Jane’s California Dried Apricots or Peaches, dried pineapple chunks, our Organic Oven Roasted Almonds and Roasted Salted Cashews, shredded coconut and shelled pistachios. (Chocolate chips optional; but why wouldn’t you opt in?)

Autumn Harvest Trail Mix

Chop up dried persimmons, Maisie Jane’s California Dried Plums & Pluots or dried apples to add to your nut mix. I love this with our Red Livermore Walnuts, Natural Almonds and sunflower seeds. So wholesome and yummy.

Asian Fusion Trail Mix

You know those cute little glazed Japanese rice crackers…the kind made into fun shapes and including spicy wasabi green peas? Up the protein content with Maisie Jane’s Natural Almonds, and add dried cherries for color and sweetness.

Caramel Popcorn Trail Mix

Start with Maisie Jane’s Caramel Corn with Almonds. Sweet, salty and toothsome—all the feels. Plus the goodness of dried fruit: add your favorites! Great for movie night and anytime.

Winter Wonderland Trail Mix

Celebrate the holidays with winter-warming Natural Pecans, pumpkin seeds and goji berries.

Barbecue Trail Mix

Just three ingredients—salty-smoky Maisie Jane’s Tamari Almonds with raisins and a dash of garlic powder—makes for a satisfying umami snack that can’t be beat.

Chocoholic Trail Mix

Sweeten up your trail mix with dark chocolate chips or broken up chocolate bars; even better, Maisie Jane’s Organic Dark Chocolate Almonds. (Don’t love chocolate? It’s possible, I know; substitute some chopped dates instead.)
