Could Eating Almonds Give You Fewer Wrinkles?

Woman in a Good Mood

According to the latest research at the University of California in Davis, a daily snack of almonds in place of other nut-free snacks reduced both the width and severity (depth and length) of wrinkles in postmenopausal women. This study was the first of its kind to investigate whether eating almonds would have an effect on skin health. We’ve known for a long time that almonds provide a significant amount of vitamin E to the diet and that this nutrient is often used in skin-care products. But would eating almonds have any effect?

In this 16-week trial, 28 healthy postmenopausal women with the same skin type (Fitzpatrick skin type 1 or 2—characterized by a strong likelihood to burn with sun exposure) were randomly assigned to one of two groups. In one group, women ate about 2 one-ounce servings of almonds as a snack. That accounted for 20% of their total daily calorie intake, or 340 calories per day on average. A control group ate a nut-free snack that also accounted for the same number of calories such as a cereal bar, granola bar or pretzels. Other than these snacks, study participants ate their regular diets and did not eat nuts or nut-containing products at other times during the study.

Skin assessments were made at the start of the study and every four weeks after that using high-resolution facial imaging and validated 3-D facial modeling and measurement. By the end of the study at 16 weeks, these tests showed that, compared to the control group, women in the intervention group had wrinkle widths decreased by 10% and wrinkle severity decreased by 9%. These are quite significant results in a relatively short period of time.

Of course, this was a very small study with limitations placed on who was accepted into the group. For example, the participants were limited to non-smokers, only post-menopausal women, and only women with the same skin type. Follow-up studies will need to expand the pool of participants to different ages and skin types to know how valid these results might be for the population as a whole. Still, as a pilot study, the results were quite encouraging and justify further investigation.

I know I’m excited! Fewer wrinkles? I know what I’m eating for a snack for now on!
