Natural or Organic Almond Butter?

Maisie Jane’s Nut Butters

If you visit the nut butter section of our online store you’ll notice that you often have a choice between natural or organic. People sometimes say “Natural is good, right? Is something labeled “organic” really any better for you?” But we know what they really mean: “Is organic worth the price?”

Great question! And, of course, that depends on your point of view. So let me tell you our own: we believe in earth-friendly farming practices, creating high quality products, and having integrity in everything we do. That means that we take pride in everything we offer and want you to have the information you need to have confidence in what you buy.

So let’s talk about the difference between products labeled “natural” and those labeled “organic.”

Natural

It might surprise you to know that in the food industry “natural” does not mean the same thing as “organic.” In fact, it doesn’t even mean that a food product is made without synthetic ingredients! A product can be labeled natural and still contain unnatural additives intended to preserve it, alter the taste, change its color or manipulate its texture. Think of pistachios in the shell that are dyed red. The pistachios are natural but the red color certainly is not. And some people are allergic to food dyes! But we don’t do that at Maisie Jane’s!

At Maisie Jane’s “natural” means no chemicals, no synthetics, and nothing from a lab. We don’t use the kinds of additives you’ll find in most other “natural” nut butters. For example:

• No mono and di-glycerides (emulsifiers that add harmful fats to your diet)!

• No hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats that are responsible for health issues like heart disease, clogged arteries, and stroke)!

• No soy lecithin (a genetically modified soy product with many uses that can disrupt your thyroid and endocrine functions or potentially aggravate breast cancer in women)!

We don’t need to add any of these. If you use quality ingredients, you don’t have to alter them! Yes, you might want to stir the nut butters you buy from us before serving them. But we think that’s a very small price to pay to avoid unhealthy and unnecessary added ingredients.

USDA Organic SealOrganic

If “natural” from Maisie Jane’s is so good — and it is! — why bother with organic? The organic label kicks up the wholesomeness several notches. It means your food is grown and harvested without harmful pesticides, herbicides, or chemical NPK fertilizers. Organic animal products must not have antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic farming integrates cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used. And we wouldn’t want it any other way!  We like to use sustainable organic practices in our family owned and operated orchards. We work in those orchards and want to keep them productive and safe for generations to come.

“Organic” is also a label that is strictly regulated by the FDA. The components of our certified organic goods are carefully produced and stored separately from our natural products. We are inspected annually by CCOF, recognized as an organic certifying authority by the USDA Organic standards.

So what should you choose?

We guarantee that the nut butters  you purchase from Maisie Jane’s are made with healthy ingredients without synthetic or harmful added ingredients. We know your budget is important so we’re proud to offer you choices and ensure that whether it has the organic label or not, you’re getting a wholesome, healthy, nutritious food. It is always best to buy the best nut butter you can afford. But if you want the best that money can buy, buy organic. It’s better for the earth; it’s better for you.
