It’s the most wonderful time of the year— almond shaking season when we knock the “l” from the almonds. (We say “ah-mond” here in Chico, with “ah” pronounced like “Sam.”) Between mid-August and October, 80% of the world’s almonds are shaken from the trees in California. Some say the season actually begins in Chico. And that means we are REALLY busy at Maisie Jane’s!
In the video above you can get a glimpse of our process behind the scenes. The shakers cause the nuts to rain from the sky. Watch your head if you’re anywhere in sight! The almonds are left to dry for a few days and are then swept into rows by a sweeper machine. A harvester or pickup machine drives over the rows and brings the nuts up into a cart. From there they go to our huller-sheller plant where the almonds are cleaned and separated from their hulls and shells. The video shows the 4ft.x 4ft. bins we use to store the nuts in at this point. It may not look like it but each bin typically holds 2,000 lbs.
We pick the bins up and bring them back to our facility where we do the final picking and sorting of the almonds. The nuts are dry roasted and then stored in refrigeration until we do the further processing of them for a wide variety of almond products such as our delicious almond butter, flavored nuts, chocolates, and more!
And then off they go to homes and businesses far and wide, from here in our local community to all across the globe! We love to think of you enjoying the results of our hard work. It’s what makes it all worthwhile.
