I came across a quirky little blog post by Bren Herrara about being intentional about your life. I’m all about that! So imagine my surprise when her post wound up being about how much she loves almonds and why they fit into her intention to have her body be in the best shape ever.
Well, it makes sense, really. Because whether your intention is to have a healthy body or one that fits into those too tight jeans, the advice is always the same: choose nutrient-dense foods (like almonds or other nuts) instead of high calorie choices that have a low nutritional value. Nutrient-dense means that you get way more value per calorie so when you fill up your plate you’re making every calorie count.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that health and weight is just about calories alone. Did you know that you can be overweight and still malnourished? The typical American diet is way too high in highly processed fattening foods, salt and sugar but too low in nutrition. That leads to weight gain and poor health. The solution is to substitute foods that are high in nutrients for those that are not and to try to keep the amount of calories you consume to a reasonable level for your height and lifestyle.
Nuts are some of the most nutrient-dense foods you could eat. Just one handful (1 oz) of almonds, for instance, provides 6 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, plus useful amounts of vitamin E, magnesium, riboflavin, calcium, and potassium. But they also contain 161 calories and 14 grams of fat. It’s healthy unsaturated fat, but don’t blame me if you gain weight after adding multiple handfuls of nuts to a diet already filled with too many fattening, high calorie foods! The idea is to substitute nuts and other nutrient dense foods for those unhealthy choices (a bakery-bought chocolate chip cookie might have 200-300 calories) and keep your consumption down to about 1 oz of nuts a day.
So be intentional! Make every calorie count. Plan your meals ahead so you have all the ingredients you need in the house ahead of time. And make sure you prepare things ahead so it’s easy to make healthy dinners you’re looking forward to when you get home from work. You’ll be less likely to grab some horrific fast food for dinner if there’s an already made salad in the dinner, some lovely chopped nuts to throw on top, and something wonderful to go with it that just needs to be popped in the oven. And you’re bound to feel a lot better, too!
