One of our key initiatives involves using solar power to run well pumps for our orchards and the orchards of small farms we partner with. This switch to renewable energy not only reduces our carbon footprint but also ensures a sustainable energy supply. We have implemented a solar production monitoring system that sends real-time data to a phone app, allowing us to track and optimize energy use. This system is a game-changer in promoting transparency and efficiency in our farming operations.

We also use Smart Irrigation Systems for Water Efficiency; Water conservation is at the forefront of our farming practices. We have equipped our well motors with variable-speed drives, which pull only the necessary amount of groundwater. This precision helps in reducing water waste significantly. Additionally, we have automated our water meters and timers, ensuring that irrigation is controlled precisely, which not only conserves water but also reduces labor costs.

To further enhance water efficiency, we use ground monitoring probes placed throughout our orchards. These probes monitor soil moisture and send data to our phones, allowing us to adjust the moisture levels remotely. This real-time information reduces the time spent on management and ensures that water is used only where and when it is needed.

 

Our micro-irrigation system is another critical component of our water conservation strategy. By using underground drip lines, we deliver water directly to the tree root systems, minimizing water loss due to evaporation, runoff, and wind. This method is more than 90% efficient in water usage compared to traditional sprinkler systems, making it a highly effective solution for our orchards.

The recent history of California serves as a stark reminder of drought’s impact. Despite the current reprieve from drought conditions, the state has endured severe drought episodes cyclically. These fluctuations underscore the vulnerability of almond farming and the urgent need for sustainable water management practices.

There is a common misconception that almond farming uses an excessive amount of California’s water. While almonds occupy 13% of the state’s irrigated farmland, they use only 9% of California’s agricultural water, which is less than their proportionate share. Almond trees require the same amount of water as other fruit and nut trees in the region, and the water used also supports the production of valuable by-products like livestock feed and firewood.
