Why Do Organic Farming?

Organic Orchard

Is “Organic” just a buzzword to make more money? Well, it is a healthy way to make a living but it’s healthy in many more ways than one! It’s healthier for the planet, it’s healthier for the local environment, it’s healthier for one and all. And it’s healthy in ways you might not expect.

The Obvious Choice for Reducing Exposure to Pesticides and Chemicals

If you’re a mom, you worry about your kids! You want them to grow up healthy and strong and happy and wise. Anything that might disrupt that just doesn’t belong on your kitchen shelves. But it’s also important for the world you and your children grow up in. Pesticides and chemicals sprayed on plants can contaminate the soil and pollute our air, and when it rains it can run off and pollute our rivers and streams, killing fish and making our water supply undrinkable. Would you want your kids wading into a stream filled with toxic chemicals? (I don’t think so!)

But not only that, water supplies in some regions have been dwindling due to rising temperatures and drought conditions. At Maisie Jane’s we have a strong philosophy regarding sustainable agriculture.  This means that we farm without polluting the natural environment. And that makes the community we live in safer and more sustainable, too.

Organic Agriculture Helps Local Plants and Animals

When a farm chooses organic methods, they tend to try to find ways to work with Nature instead of against it. That means many different things. But one thing we’ve done on our farms is work to figure out how to create habitat for beneficial insects that naturally decrease the invasive pests that could hurt the almond crop. We leave part of the orchards’ natural grasses in place rather than chopping it down. We also deliberately plant native bushes and plants that attract bees and create a safe forage area for them. We think that creates a healthier more balanced ecosystem and makes a healthier home for all the wildlife in our vicinity.

Organic Methods Fight Global Warming

Rodale Institute has been running America’s longest running farm trial comparing conventional and organic agriculture. The trial has been running since 1981 and one of the significant results they have documented is that a healthy organic farming system has the ability to pull greenhouse gas carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and store it safely in the soil. It’s not always a simple process to figure out how to address all the challenges involved. But according to the study: “If only 10,000 medium size farms in the U.S. converted to organic production, they would store so much carbon in the soil that it would be the equivalent of taking 1,174,400 cars off the road or reducing car miles driven by 14.62 billion miles.” The possibilities are exciting!
